Regarding concerns about travel to Rocky Point, let me convey the current conditions... Stories about fake checkpoints, people being randomly stopped and assaulted, or Mexican officials stopping people with criminal intentions are all propaganda. Highway 8 from Sonoyta Mexico (just across the border from Lukeville) to Rocky Point is as safe as ever. In fact, the green and white pick-up trucks that cruise this section of highway have been misinterpreted as "fake Mexican officials stopping people for bad intentions". In fact, these are State of Sonora appointed and funded "assist vehicles", driving up and down Highway 8 looking for motorists with break-down issues, flat tires, or other roadside issues, and are there for the sole purpose of assisting anyone in need. The Mexican Highway Patrol has upped their active car count on this section of highway from one to two vehicles during high traffic times. Plus, the checkpoints on either or both sides of Sonoyta are checking for Mexican Nationals that are out of place more than American tourists making their way to Rocky Point. There have been no reported issues on the highway, day or night, for months now. Virtually everyone that comes into my office and I see here says the same thing... they had no issues getting here, and have had none while here. It is still statistically FAR safer here than most any city in the U.S., and far safer than areas of both Phoenix and Tucson!
So, come see the TRUTH for yourself... it is SAFE here or I wouldn't stay here! Come enjoy the white sand beaches and the wide variety of shoreline features in Cholla Bay and on Sandy Beach... (nice beach sand on Tucson Beach in Cholla Bay, walking the empty Bay at low tide searching for sea shells, clams, starfish & Sand Dollars, plus the rocks and tide pools on the south side of the peninsula), and of course there is the 5-mile long stretch of Sandy Beach! The options are many. Plus, the local food and gathering spots provide another outlet for enjoyment.
