In the Beginning... The rugged drama of the desert has been meeting the soft embrace of the sea for thousands of years. The pure white sand beaches remain virtually untouched, the only measure of time being the sun. Solely the “Guaimas” tribe – and the natural beauty of the land and seascape - inhabited this beautiful, hidden paradise. It was in 1539 when the area was discovered by Spanish explorers, and became one of the busiest ports in Mexico. It is only within the past 40 years that much development has reached the beautiful white beaches. Fishing enthusiasts and winter visitors seeking serenity have begun to discover the area, mostly from the US, Canada, and other parts of Mexico. San Carlos Today The tranquility and peace that has defined San Carlos since the dawn of time, has remained a constant. Sparsely populated with a combination of locals and travelers, the paradise of San Carlos continues to be a peaceful respite from the rest of the world. It is the beautiful beaches, quiet yet entertaining international atmosphere, water sports and fishing facilities, exquisite handmade crafts, fine dining and spectacular sunsets that draws people in. The elegance of San Carlos has also been a lure for the motion picture industry. Films like Catch 22, Lucky Lady ( with Liza Minelli, Gene Hackman & Burt Reynolds) and more recently The Mask of Zorro (with Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins and Catherine Zeta Jones) were all filmed in San Carlos. On your first visit to San Carlos You will admire the beauty of its landscapes, starting with the scenic corridor accompanied with the striking “Tetakawi” hill in its background; this is a copper colored mountain, which symbolizes the city. The sea breeze, waves, pristine beaches and elegant hotels and condominiums that make up this peaceful paradise, inspires visitors to enjoy all the activities they choose to do. The landscape combines the colored copper mountains, native desert vegetation and the beautiful blue sea, that makes you want to explore the land, sail the water, go fishing, or discover its sub-marine life. San Carlos offers you much more than a beach…it presents an unlimited assortment of activities that will stay forever in your memory! Make your own memories, here. The Sea of Cortez, (the body of water between mainland Mexico and the Baja Peninsula) is legendary for its warm, crystal-clear waters and the amazing life it supports. Giant grey whales patrol its depths and graceful sea birds skim its surface. Around the bay of San Carlos, groups of sea lions cruise around craggy islands that jut out of the bright blue water. Its bounty of sport fish has drawn fishermen here for generations, and its sheer beauty beckons to boaters, divers, and anyone who simply loves the sea. At day's end, relax poolside, beachfront, or both!
