The following is commentary on an article found in the Ventura (California) County News regarding the flow of retired people, "expatriots" if you will, into Mexico where retirement living can be an estimated 30% less than in the United States.  Read on...

Finally an article that proclaims the great things about Mexico & keeps the violence in perspective (much less violent than the US).

Mexico is a great place to retire and live. While the locations that they mentioned are wonderful. Many US retirees are not looking to be so remote.

Many retirees want a location where their children & grandchildren can come visit for the weekend & where US medical facilities & US conveniences are within quick reach.

We discovered the town of Puerto Penasco (aka Rocky Point) in our quest for such a locale. This town is located on the mainland side of the Gulf of California (aka Sea of Cortez). Rocky Point is located an hour south of the border & only 3.5 hours from Phoenix & Tucson. The highways are all paved & maintained. The old fishing town has built itself up & is now a tourism destination.

Rocky Point is building a new international airport. There is also a brand new, state-of-the-art medical facility with rapid transport to US hospitals.

The town itself is fun to explore, however the areas just outside Rocky Point are where to look for property. Sandy Beach to the NW is lined with high rise condos & golf courses; it feels a bit like Cabo. Just beyond Sandy Beach is the community of Cholla Bay. This peninsula community is a GEM; it has a neighborhood feel & has many wonderful homes. You can purchase a oceanview home, 2 minutes from the beach for $200,000 or a 2nd row oceanview lot for $60,000. Construction prices on average are approx. $60/sf. Amazing.

Because the region is a peninsula, you always have a lot of options for activities: fish off the rocks, launch your sportfishing boat & head out to sea, jet ski in the calm bay, or hang out on the beach.
Cholla Bay also has a cantina, cafes, and taco bars.

We bought property there in the 90's & have never regretted it; we have seen incredible appreciation & there are still deals to be had."
